UNITED HOUNDSMEN ASSOCIATION – RULES & REGULATIONS FOR 2026 COMPETITION SEASON 

  • Effective March 1, 2026 
  • All rules, policies, and interpretations are subject to the final decision by UHA in its sole judgment and discretion. 

SECTION I

PART A – Membership 

  1. Membership Forms and Dog Degree Registration forms will be available at every event, by phone, and website. 
  2. All who apply for membership to the United Houndsmen Association agree to and will follow all of the rules and regulations put in place in the rulebook & regulations at all times. Those accepted as members also agree to check the website for announcements, updates, and leadership race boards. Members agree to accept as final any decisions made by the UHA, Event Leader, Committee, or Panel. Failure to do so could result to or lead to probation or barring of membership. 
  3.  Members must agree to conduct themselves as good sportsmen/sportswomen when at any UHA event. Those that do not conduct themselves in a manner that is considered professional may receive disciplinary action that could result in being suspended.  
  4. UHA Executives reserves the right to question the conduct of any member of the United Houndsmen Association at any time if the conduct is considered adverse to the principles of the UHA. Any member of the UHA can have their membership along with the privilege of membership suspended or revoked at any time. Those members that are suspended for 30 days or more, can , at the decision of the UHA, lose their position in any owner/handler/ and/or dog position(s) in the standings. They will also forfeit any awards that could have possibly been awarded to them had they kept said position. 
  5. All members of the United Houndsmen Association agree that the UHA, its owners, committee members, directors, officers, event leaders, and the host clubs are NOT liable for any accident, injury incident, theft, or loss of any kind that happens at any UHA Event or while traveling to/from the event.  
  6. No member, owner, handler, spectator, club, group of individuals, city, business, or volunteer can hold UHA, it’s owners, investors, sponsors, responsible or at fault for any injury, theft, or loss of life of any individual or dog.
  7. Only handlers with a valid & active UHA number may enter UHA event/competition. The dog’s owner and dog must also have an active UHA membership registration number in order to enter any UHA Hunting Event.
  8. Membership gives the member the privilege to enter, participate, or handle a dog in a UHA event as long as all rules are followed. 
  9. Dog Registration, Owner, and Handler numbers are only valid for the competition year in which they are purchased. The 2026 Competition season will begin start on March 1nd, 2026 and end on the last day of February 2027, which will be February 28, 2027.
  10. All dog, owner and handler numbers expire at the end of the UHA competition year and must be renewed before either dog and/or owner/handler will be allowed to enter any UHA event for the next competition season. The owner and handler must both have a member # as well as all owners in a co-owned dog. 
  11. $25 yearly Membership Fee for Owner & Handlers –  valid for the UHA Competition Season (March 2nd, 2026 – Last day of February 2027) 
  12. $10 yearly Youth Membership Fee- valid for the UHA Competition Season (March 2nd, 2026- Last day of February 2027.) 
  13. $15 yearly Dog Fee – valid for the UHA Competition Season (March 2nd, 2026- Last day of February 2027.) 

PART B – DOG DEGREE STATUS PERFORMANCE PROGRAM  **and requirements to earn them. 

UHA Dog Degree Status Night Hunt Performance program titles:

NOW BASED ON LIFETIME EARNINGS.

LIFETIME EARNINGS: IS ANY MONEY WON AT ANY UHA LICENSED EVENT. BOTH HUNT MONEY & ADDED MONEY WILL COUNT. ALSO, ANY MAJOR EVENTS WHERE THE PRIZE IS NOT MONEY, THE AWARD / PRIZE BEING WON WILL CREDITED TO THE DOGS LIFETIME EARNINGS AS WELL. THE PRIZE AMOUNT AWARDED WILL BE BASED ON PUBLIC RETAIL PRICE / MSRP.

  1. To be declared an UHA Bronze Degree Champion, a dog must win $1,000 in lifetime earnings, and be reported to and recorded on the records at the UHA Office.  
  2. To be declared an UHA Silver Degree Champion, a dog must win $5,000 in lifetime earnings, and be reported to and recorded on the records at the UHA Office.  
  3. To be declared an UHA Gold Degree Champion, a dog must win $10,000 in lifetime earnings, and be reported to and recorded on the records at the UHA Office.  
  4. To be declared an UHA Platinum Degree Champion, a dog must win $50,000 in lifetime earnings, and be reported to and recorded on the records at the UHA Office.  
  5. To be declared an UHA Superior Platinum Degree Champion, a dog must win $100,000 in lifetime earnings, and be reported to and recorded on the records at the UHA Office.  
  6. To be declared a UHA Hall of Fame Champion, a dog must win $200,000 in lifetime earnings, and be reported to and recorded on the records at the UHA Office.  

 PART C – Club Information 

  1. Clubs will be approved by UHA to host & conduct UHA Events by calling or texting 940-200-1596. In 2026 NEW Clubs must purchase a club packet for only $60. This is enough to run 12-16 hunts. Hunts mush be submitted 14 days in advance. Approved hunt dates will be listed on uhahunts.com. You can also email jonjohnson@uhahunts.com for assistance. Clubs will receive a portion of total proceeds at each event. (Please refer to awards charts)
  2. Clubs need to provide the following informations to begin hosting hunts and to schedule future hunts. Club Location/Address, Club Director & Phone #, Hunt Date, Hunt Deadline, preferred length of casts, event type, and entry fee.
  3. Clubs may choose on their own accord to organize, sponsor, and/or conduct calcuttas, jackpots, or other similar events only in accordance with applicable state and local gaming laws. The fees, rules, and dispersion of these shall be solely the responsibility of the host club. Such events shall in no way interfere with or restrict the normal and customary length of hunt times or deadlines. UHA reserves the right to intervene, cancel, or modify any Calcutta, jackpot, or any similar event that inappropriately interferes with the function of the UHA licensed event or that may adversely impact or negatively affect the operations, image, or reputation of UHA.
  4. UHA requires NEW clubs to have at least 3 people become members of the UHA in order to open new clubs, and host hunts.
  5. In addition to UHA rules and policies, clubs must ensure that all Federal, state and local laws are followed. It is the club’s responsibility to be aware of all applicable laws and regulations, and UHA bears no responsibility. 
  6. Clubs are required to return hunt reports and scorecards within 7 days (post marked if mailed) after an event. These can be submitted by email (jonjohnson@uhahunts.com) or mailed to UHA (PO Box 67 Anson, TX 79501). If mailed, please save a picture of the hunt report and all scorecards in case they are lost in transit.
  7. Approved dates cannot be changed or canceled without approval from the UHA. 
  8.  A club may not change the location of an event without contacting UHA at least 7 days prior to the event. 
  9. Clubs cannot hold more than 4 UHA open hunts per month. Double headers and/or hunts that run consecutive days only count as 1 hunt. Consecutive day hunts will be limited to 6 days and each club will only be approved for one consecutive day hunt (of 3 or more days) every 90 days. 
  10. Club Official/Event Leader: All clubs hosting a UHA event must provide a person who knows the rules to serve as the Club Director or Event Leader. UHA reserves the right to appoint or assist in appointing a Hunt Official for consecutive day events, and/or any event UHA Classifies as a “Major Event”. UHA also reserves the right to step in at any hunt, to appoint a Hunt Official or observe any UHA Event, if deemed necessary by a UHA Executive.
  11. Hunt Officials must post entry deadline time and deadline for return of scorecards. 
  12. The club is responsible for having an adequate number of qualified guides on hand. 
  13. The club is also responsible for guides they use having permission to hunt where they take their casts. 
  14. When taking entries, confirm the owner, dog, or handler member number and make sure it has not expired. If they aren’t a member or the dog is not registered, provide them the opportunity to do so. Handler and Dog registration forms should be kept on hand by all clubs. 
  15. Send in the fully completed membership and/or dog registration application and all fees with your hunt reports. 
  16. Complete the Official UHA hunt report forms. Be sure that the UHA number, the current owner’s name, handler’s name and address for each is correct. 
  17. Use dog(s) complete name on reports. All report forms must be thoroughly checked and signed by the Hunt Official or a club officer.  
  18. Clubs must send a photo of all cast winners noting their placement as soon as possible after any event. 

UHA EVENT OPTIONS

  1. Open Events: UHA offers a $20 Open Event Fee for Youth Hunts only. UHA offers a $35 & $60 Open Event Fee for Open Events or Youth Hunts. $20 & $35 Open Event awards are to be automatically split between each cast winner. $60 Open Events may be hunted off, on the weekends only, unless approved by UHA with a Major Event or in conjunction with a Major Event. Again this is to be approved prior by UHA, any other $60 open event awards held during the week are to automatically split between each cast winner.
  2. Bench Show: UHA offers bench shows, earn money, points, and qualify for UHA Master of the Table, (see uhahunts.com for details). You can schedule stand along bench show event, or in conjunctions with hunts. Double Headers CAN have Double Header Bench Shows. Entry Fee Options $10 (youth only), $25, and $50.
  3. Lucky Dog Hunts: UHA offers 9 – 16 dog hunts, entry fees must be $100 and up. Awards paid at each event, plus earn points to win FREE truck hunt entries. See uhahunt.com for details, and call 940-200-1596 to schedule, get payout options, and get more information on these hunts.

The club will be responsible for following the above rules. Failure to do so may result in the loss of approval of future UHA events. 

Senior Casts – Any individual age 55 or older may request a Senior cast. (b) It takes a complete cast of 3 – 4 individuals 55 or older agreeing to hunt in a senior for one to be permitted, and can not mess up the flow or payout of the hunt. (c.) They will be allowed and permitted at ALL UHA hunts where enough handlers are available and agree to compete in a Senior cast of 55 years or older.

Youth Casts – Any individual age 4 – 17 years old may request a Youth cast. (b) It takes a complete cast of 3 or more youth for a cast to be permitted, and can not mess up the flow or payout of the hunt.  (c.) They will be allowed and permitted at ALL UHA hunts where enough handlers are available and agree to compete in a Youth Casts.

SECTION II

PART A – UHA Officials Coon Hunting Rules   

  1. Entries 
    1. Be sure to fill out the dog’s name and record it on the entry slip so that UHA can accurately identify the dog and verify if the dog & member are registered with the United Houndsmen Association. Always use accurate registration information when entering. The Owner’s and Handler’s name are to be written on the entry slip, as well. No person is allowed to participate in a UHA sanctioned event without first becoming a member of the UHA. Anyone who has previously applied for membership and has not received their membership number must present the receipt of membership application to the Hunt Director before being allowed to enter the UHA event. All membership and registration fees must be paid before the cast member leaves for the woods for any awards earned at the specific event to be credited toward the dog’s earnings. It is the Handler’s responsibility to provide the correct dog’s name and registered Owners Name. Handler’s are to insure that both the Owner and Handler have a current UHA membership. Dogs will not receive credit for awards earned if the dog, owner and handler information is not current and/or accurate. 
    2. Dogs with the same owners are required to draw separate casts when and if enough casts are available to split them. An owner with multiple dogs entered in the same hunt must be drawn in separate casts when possible.
  2. Entry Deadline 
    1. Entries can not close until the advertised deadline. Later entry deadlines during summer months will be available upon request. To schedule later deadlines, the club must contact UHA early enough to allow time for advertisement on UHA website. Hunt Directors can take entries after the advertised deadline at their discretion. However, no entries may be taken after the drawout has started and no entries may be taken more than thirty (30) minutes after the advertised entry deadline. All handlers and dogs should be on the grounds when casts are drawn. No exception to this. 
  3. Cast Requirements
    1. There must be at least 3 dogs to hold an open or youth open cast at any UHA licensed event. In the event there is a 2 dog casts because of # of dogs entered (5 dogs) , there must be a non-hunting judge OR an additional voting UHA member that both hunters agree upon.
  4. Judges 
    1. Judges should be selected from the entrants the Hunt Director feels are most qualified to conduct a cast. If possible, use Judges who are not members of the host club and do not live in the local area. Club members and members who live in the local area should serve as Hunting Guides. After determining the number of Judges needed, and selecting Judges, ask each member and ask if they will agree to serve. 
  5. Non-Hunting Judges 
    1. The non-hunting judge will have full authority and will make all decisions, No voting. In the event any handler has a question on rules, they may question it for a panel to hear. UHA reserves the right to appoint backup judges to any cast.
  6. Back-Up Judges
    1. Back-Up Judges can be assigned to any cast at the Hunt Director’s or UHA discretion. Their job will be to assist the Non-Hunting Judge with split trees, timing (if asked), and scorecard (if asked). UHA reserves the right to appoint backup judges to any cast.
  7. Guide 
    1. The Hunt Director should ask entrants if they are willing to and can guide their cast to safe hunting grounds where they have permission. All hunting and non hunting guides used must be drawn to casts at random. Those selected as hunting guides must guide their cast without assistance from any other individual. Hunting guides arranging for another person to guide their cast is strictly prohibited, violators must be reported and those involved are subject to disciplinary action. Hunting area should be close enough to allow the cast to complete the hunt and return to the clubhouse before the deadline. If possible, casting ground should be where the cast can compete safely for the entire hunt without calling time-out or moving. Clubs should use area “Hunting Guides” first, area “Non- Hunting Guides” second and out of area “Hunting Guides” as the third option. No one will be permitted to guide a cast in a raccoon-controlled environment or enclosed pen.  
  8. Hunt Deadline  
    1. Deadline for the cast winner and scorecard to be back at the clubhouse for recasting should be announced and written on the scorecard. Allow as much time as possible for completion of the first cast and collecting dogs for recasting. 
  9. THERMALS may be used on any UHA Cast, to assist the handler in finding the location a coon may be. Coon must be seen and scored by the naked eye, and seen by a majority of the cast. Thermal is for assistance, not scoring. Thermals may NOT be used to make any claim or judgment on places of refuge. Trees MUST still be scored by the naked eye. Thermals are used to assist in locating the locations of a coon ONLY, as stated above.

HUNT RULES

  1. (1 Minute) Strike Rule. Each time a dog(s) is turned loose, the handler has a 1 Minute grace period in which their dog does not have to be called. Any dog struck under the 1 minute needs to carry the track out. After the 1 Minute period, the dog must be called struck on or before the third bark. If a handler fails to call his or her dog struck on or after the 3rd bark, a judge must ask for a call, the dog will be minused the next available strike position, if not struck. The dog will be minused each position, for each bark after the 3rd until it is struck in.
  2. The appointed judges needs to acknowledge each handler’s calls by repeating the dog’s name and number of points awarded for every strike and tree call made. 
  3. When dog(s) are turned loose, the cast should not walk to any dog not struck in, however you may slowly walk in the direction of which dogs were sent. 
  4. You can not walk towards a dog or try and gain ground on a dog or any dog that is not struck in. 
  5. No dog or score can be altered or called based off of a tracking device, it may be used in assistance for safety with the Guides & cast members consultation.
  6. All cast members must walk at a pace that all handlers can maintain. AND must maintain a reasonable distance of all dogs struck in. Failure to do so can result in a scratch able offence, if the following process is followed. 1. Handlers must request the cast to maintain a reasonable pace / distance. If they fail to do so. 2. Handler then needs to request the cast members to stop walking, catch up, and put (in notes section) “cast has been warned to maintain reasonable pace with __ minutes left in cast. If they fail to do so. 3. Handler then needs AGAIN to request the cast members to stop walking, catch up, make note (same spot) of time left in cast, and call one of the following IMMEDIATELY. If the process is followed, and confirmed, we will ask cast members to gather their dogs, scratch them, and declare the remaining dog the winner, or we may allow them to continue the cast under STRICT circumstances
  7. After the dog(s) are struck in, the cast will attempt to always remain as close to the dog(s) as possible, within reason. If the cast is unable to keep all dog(s) in hearing, meaning dogs are out of pocket in multiple directions, the majority of the cast may agree to call timeout. Strike points will be deleted, when timeout is called for this reason.See timeout rules. 
  8. The cast must stay together and maintain a pace suitable for everyone.  A handler may leave the cast to go to a split tree when tree time is up, unless there are not enough voting handlers to score the trees before their tree. Their MUST be enough remaining cast members to score the cast in order for you to leave and go handle their dog. A handler going to a split tree must go directly to leash his/her dog and wait for the cast to arrive. Handler should not shine tree or pick a different tree. If caught doing so, you will be charged all remaining booked entires, removed from event, and barred for up to 3 years from UHA.
  9. Handlers should allow the judge to reach the tree first. Dog(s) declared treed must show treed. 

SECTION III – SCORING & POINTS

PART A – STRIKE POINTS 

  • STRIKE POINTS: 100 points for the dog struck first, 75 second dog struck, 50 points third dog and 25 points fourth. All dogs must be loose and competing for strike for 100 strike points to be available. When dog(s) are re-struck after being scored plus, minus, circle or deleted they may only be re-struck for 25 points, unless all dogs are competing for 100 strike points, or the minus was for a miscall. 
  • Split Strike Points 
  • • 1st + 2nd = 87 ½ 
  • • 1st + 2nd + 3rd = 75 
  • • 1st + 2nd + 3rd + 4th = 62 ½ 
  • • 2nd + 3rd = 62 ½ 
  • • 2nd + 3rd + 4th = 50 
  • • 3rd + 4th = 37 ½. 
  • Dog(s) cannot receive scorable strike points if not struck before the first dog is declared treed unless treed split. However, the dog(s) can receive tree points if it trees on the tree and declared treed within the three (3) minutes tree time.  
  • A handler calling the wrong dog (strike or tree) will be minused the next available position. (A.) PLEASE REFER TO YOUTH RULES FOR JR DIVISION IF A JUNIOR YOUTH HUNTER, THIS RULE IS SUPERSEDED FOR YOUTH HUNTERS IN OUR JUNIOR DIVISION YOUTH DIVISION.
  • Babbling: Dog(s) declared struck and determined to be babbling shall be minused on strike. A dog will be considered babbling only if struck under the 1 minute  and does not carry the track out. If a dog strikes under 1 minute it must continue to bark after the 1 minute. Once 1 minute is up and dog barks after it, the strike will be considered carried out at that very second, the dog can only be minused for babbling if struck under the minute, the dog shuts up, and after the 1 minute is up it does not carry the track out. If there is any question when a hunting judge is used, the cast must vote immediately. It takes a majority of cast votes to minus. On a 4 dog cast, with a hunting judge, a 2-2 vote will be scored based on how judge voted.
  • If more than one handler strikes their dog at the same time and cannot be determined who was called first, points will be split for positions undetermined.

Strike points will be minus 

  • If none of the declared struck dogs open within six (6) minutes of hunting time. Judge must announce the six when started, and must update time if/when asked.
  • On any dog that quits their track and comes into a cast, a cast may not intentionally walk up on a dog that is struck. No dog can be penalized if a cast purposely walks in on a dog that is struck and trailing. If a dog comes into a cast and continues on trailing with its nose on the ground it will not be minused.
  • On any dog that trees, catches, or bays off game. Majority of the cast must witness and score it. For off game in trees or hole, strike and tree points will be minused. For off game caught or bayed. Strike points will be minused and tree points deleted.

PART B – TREE POINTS  

  • 125 points for the dog treed first, 75 points second dog declared treed, 50 points third, and 25 points fourth.  
  • Split Tree Points 
  • • 1st + 2nd = 100 
  • • 1st + 2nd + 3rd = 83 1/3 
  • • 1st + 2nd + 3rd + 4th = 68 ¾ 
  • • 2nd + 3rd = 62 ½ 
  • • 2nd + 3rd + 4th = 50 
  • • 3rd + 4th = 37 ½. 
  • COUNTDOWN TREE RULE: Once the first dog is declared treed, a 3 minute tree time has to start, after 30 seconds expired 2nd tree positions will be closed and only 3rd & 4th Position will be available. Once an additional 30 seconds expires, 1 minute total, 3rd tree position is closed and only 4th position will be available for the remaining 2 minutes of that tree time. Once tree time has expired (a total of 3 minutes) all positions will be closed, and no dogs will be able to tree in on that tree. Run a separate tree time for each split tree, if necessary.
  • Tree is dead after three minutes, from the first dog declared treed. Run separate times for split trees. 
  • Dogs not opening on track must be declared struck before a tree call will be accepted.  
  • Dog(s) must open and be heard opening when declared struck or treed. Otherwise, the call may not be accepted, and the handler will be penalized.
  • Points may be split for position when called positions cannot be determined, by a majority of the cast.

PART C – Scoring 

  1. Scorecards should be carried by the Judge or UHA Member and must be scored in plain view of all cast members. Cast members can ask to view and look at the score card at any time.
  2. VOTING PROCEDURE WITH HUNTING JUDGES. Each handler will serve as a voting member. After the judge makes ANY decision, a request for a vote may be raised by ANY handler of the cast. Any handler who will not cast their vote when asked concerning a question will be scratched and removed from the cast. When four members vote 2-2 on the scoring of a judgment situation, the score will remain as the judge originally scored it. (This does NOT apply to the scoring of a tree.) Any cast member disagreeing with the results of a cast vote may post a question there the question procedure process.
  3. Dogs must hold the tree for three (3) minutes unless all dogs in cast are declared treed, on leash, or hunting time has expired. If one dog is in cast, the dog must hold the tree for three (3) minutes. If possible, be as close to the tree within three (3) minutes. If handlers are so far from tree that it will take more than three (3) minutes to get to tree, they may start walking toward the tree, but stopping periodically to let other handlers see if their dog is treeing. 
  4. Six (6) minutes of hunting time may be used to shine trees. (A.) PLEASE REFER TO YOUTH RULES THIS RULE IS SUPERSEDED FOR YOUTH HUNTERS IN OUR JUNIOR DIVISION YOUTH DIVISION.
  5. Individuals holding the first tree shall be granted first two (2) minutes to shine alone if they want, when asked by the judge. Judge should ask at every tree.
  6. Where dogs are split, the judge will go with the handler to the dog that trees first. Separate time must be kept on each tree unless all dogs are called treed or together. Handlers can go handle their dog on a split tree when scoring a tree, if a majority remains to score the tree being scored at that time. Communicate with cast, common sense. At no time may a handler leave without asking the judge.
  7. A dog declared struck after the recast, receives the next available strike position. The strike position previously held by dog(s) on leash is not available until dog(s) are recast. Note: It is possible that multiple dogs may occupy the fourth strike position. 
  8. Dogs at tree or coming into any tree must be leashed and handled. 
  9. All dogs called treed during allowed hunting time must be scored. 
  10. RECASTING – After a tree has been scored, the cast must walk 1 minute and cut your dog. Once 1 mintue is up, dogs are to be recast. Once dogs are cut, if you walked out of hearing you must get back into hearing of dogs struck in.
  11. No leash lock ever, except where dogs are scored out of order. Dogs do not have to be opening or within hearing to cut loose. Only in the event of scoring out an order, would a dog be leash locked until back in order, but follow EXCESSIVE LEASH LOCK RULE. In all other cases, dog(s) must be recast until hunt time expires. 
  12. EXCESSIVE LEASH LOCK: In the event you score out of order, dogs are to be leash locked until back in order in 1 hour casts. IN 90 MINUTE OR 2 HOUR CASTS, if you score out of order there will be a 30 minute “MAX LOCK” for 90 minute hunts , and 45 minutes for 2 hour hunts. Meaning if you score out of order and you do not get back in order to cut within the times mentioned above you get to cut no more than 1 minute past tie mentioned, based on length of cast. If for any reason SAFETY is the reason it take longer to get back in order, then the safety retrieval timeout rule should be considered (see below). This should have been considered from the moment you got out of order, if the case. 

PART D – PLUS POINTS 

  1. When dogs strike and tree and coon is seen during shining time, by a non-hunting Judge, or by a majority of the cast when a hunting Judge is used. Dogs strike points and tree points will be plus.
  2. When a dog is declared struck and treed and coon is seen other than in a tree, such as a barn, old house, building, brush pile, or hole, the dog(s) that were declared treed are to receive strike and tree points. Dogs not called treed shall receive plus strike points only. 
  3. If dog(s) catches coon on the ground, strike points only can be plused, and tree points will be deleted, if applicable. Coon must be seen. If the cast hears a dog(s) fighting a coon or any game, the cast must go investigate immediately, score the situation appropriately, get the dog(s) gathered, walk them a reasonable distance and recast. 
  4. Dog(s) that are shut out must still be declared struck. They are eligible for tree points if they are declared treed within the three minute tree time.

PART E – MINUS POINTS

  1. Leaving Tree – When a dog has been declared treed and the dog leaves the tree, its tree points will be minused. If the dog continues on trail and does not come into cast or 6 does not catch dogs, its strike points remain alive. If the dog returns to the tree before the tree is closed, the handler may re-tree for the next available position on the tree. 
  2. Treeing Empty Tree – When dog(s) tree and the cast or non-hunting judge can plainly see that no coon is there and there is no place in the tree, or place of refuge, for one to be hiding. Strike and tree points will be minused.
  3. Dog(s) Coming into Plus or off-game Tree – Any dog handled but not declared treed at a tree that is being scored or has just been scored prior to treed dog(s) being led away to recast will have their strike points minused if coon or off game is scored unless dog(s) were declared struck after the first dog on this tree was declared treed. 
  4. After a dog is declared treed, at least one of the dogs declared treed must bark at least once every two minutes until cast arrives at the tree, or dogs declared treed at that tree will be minused, their tree points, and the tree will be open. 
  5. Dogs shut out on strike, by not being struck in before a dog trees, cannot receive strike points on that tree, unless the dog trees split. The dog (s) must still be declared struck, and can still receive tree points if called treed before the tree time is over, that being 3 minutes. In this case, strike points will be deleted.  
  6. Dog should not be minused tree points if he comes back a short distance, under the canopy of the tree, to meet the handler as long as the dog goes back and shows treed. Dogs should show and retree without any assistance before being handled.
  7. When a dog returns to a tree that it has previously been scored/handled on, that dog will receive 125 minus, and will be considered the 2nd time the dog has been handled at the tree. If the dog(s) returns a 3rd time, the dog(s) will be scratched. No dog may be handled on the same tree 3 times and continue to hunt. 1st time a dog is at a tree the cast or non-hunting judge is to score it for what it is, 2nd time handled on the same tree, dog(s) are to receive 125 minus, the 3rd time they are scratched from the cast. If all dogs get scratched at the same time the dog that is winning at the time of all dogs being scratched will be the winner of that cast. If a tie in this situation, flip a coin.
  8. Calling a Dog That Has Not opened – A dog called struck (or treed) must have opened immediately prior to the call. If any handler calls his/her dog that has not opened, miscalls, or calls another handler’s dog by mistake, the judge will award the points for that position and minus them. If two or more handlers strike or tree the same dog on the same bark(s) in an attempt to earn the same number of points, the handler(s) calling the wrong dog will be minused the same number of points as they were attempting to gain. 

PART F – CIRCLE POINTS

  1. Points will be circle if the tree has a hole large enough for a coon to enter into or the tree has a nest, or a place of refuge where a coon could be hidden and/or not visible. 
  2. Points will be deleted if half the cast votes circle and half the cast votes to minus a tree. 
  3. Points will be circle if half the cast votes to plus and half the cast votes to circle a tree. 
  4. CIRCLE TREES – Points will be circled when a dog strikes and trees up a tree or other place of refuge where there could be a coon, yet no coon and no off game is seen. No trees should be climbed; however, every reasonable effort should be made to score a dog. Stepping up on a stump or log is not considered climbing. Any handler has the right to search a hole that any dog is called treed in. Under no circumstances can strike points be circled unless they are connected to circle tree points. 

PART G – Deleted Points 

  1. A. Delete Points under These Conditions: 

(a) Strike points of dog(s) struck, but not declared treed, at the point hunting time expires. 

(b) Strike and tree points of dog(s) if time-out must be called. 

(c) Strike and tree points of dog(s) if they must be called off because of livestock or nearness of a highway, buildings, etc. 

(d) Strike and tree points of dog(s) whose scores are altered through interference of a person or dog(s) that are not members of the cast. 

  1. Dog(s) Coming into a Tree – Any dog(s) that comes into a tree while scoring a tree will have their strike minused. If the dog is there before handler arrive at tree and are not treed in or can’t tree in, strike points will be deleted if circle or slick, and minused for slick of off game. 
  2. Dog Treed on Dead Tree – When a dog is called treed after Three (3) minutes are up on a tree, the dog will receive 125 tree points. These tree points will be deleted if it is in fact treed on the dead tree. 
  3. Scoring Dead Game – Dogs declared treed on or handled at a tree containing a dead raccoon or dead off game will have all strike and tree points deleted unless live game is also seen in the tree. Scoring Game in Cage/Trap – If dogs have been declared treed and are found baying or treeing a raccoon or off game that is in a cage or trap, strike and tree points for all dogs involved will be deleted. 
  4. Dangerous Obstacle/Deep Water – When dog(s) are treed across deep water or any other dangerous obstacle, after all efforts to reach dog(s) have been exhausted and the cast cannot reach dog(s), all points should be deleted and the time-out rule applied. Under no circumstances should any cast member attempt to cross water deep enough to require swimming. 
  5. Squirrel rule – If a squirrel is seen in a tree while the tree is being scored and there is a place of refuge in the tree large enough to conceal a raccoon, circle strike and tree. If no place of refuge strike and tree is to be minused. If raccoon is seen as well, strike and tree is plused. If possum is seen, strike and tree is minused in open events & dog will be scratched in Lucky Dog Hunts & Major Events. 
  6. SECTION IV – DETERMINING A WINNER

PART A – HOW TO DETERMINE A WINNER

  • a. Final Score – Dog’s final score is determined by subtracting all minus points from all plus points. All circle points count as zero as a final score. The following formula applies to selecting a cast winner, determining final cast eligibility and placing dogs in a final cast. After determining the final score, the order of placement is as follows: 
  • (1) Most Plus Points – If more than one (1) dog has the same amount of plus points as a final score, see tie breaking rules. 
  • (2) Total score of zero – All circle points count as zero for a final score. If more than one (1) dog has a final score of zero (no plus and no minus points), see tie breaking rules. 
  • (3) Least Minus Points with Plus or Circle Points – The dog with the least minus points that has scored plus or circle points. 
  • (4) Least Minus Points without Plus or Circle Points – The dog with the least minus points without scoring plus or circle points. 
  • A dog without plus or circle points cannot place over a dog who has scored plus points or circle points. 
  • b. Breaking Ties –  All ties must be broken to determine a cast winner or placement.

Ties will be broken as follows:

  1. The dog with the most plus tree points. 
  2. The dog with the most plus strike points.
  3. The dog with the most circle points, combined strike and tree circle points.
  4. The dog with the most circle tree points.
  5. The dog with the least minus points.
  6. If there is still a tie; do not catch dogs or call time out. The dogs tied will continue hunting until the tie is broken. All time-based rules that are started in regulation time will carry over into overtime. In sudden death, the first dog to score plus, minus or circle points will break the tie. However, the score at the end of the original hunting time will remain the final score for determining placement in the hunt. As an alternative to overtime, tied handlers may unanimously vote to flip a coin to determine the winner

PART B – PROOF READ SCORECARDS

  1. ALL points must be scored with plus, minus, or delete BEFORE turning in. Hunt Director will give one opportunity for any corrections, before throwing the card out for mistakes.
  2. Check all scorecards to ensure that math is correct, the correct cast winners are indicated, and that all handlers have signed certifying the card to be accurate. UHA reserves the right to correct any error discovered but bears no responsibility to change and/or correct any scorecard that has not been questioned in an appropriate and timely manner by a cast member.

SECTION V – SCRATCHING OFFENSES 

  1. LUCKY DOG HUNTS & MAJOR EVENTS: ANY dog(s) that trees, catches, bays, or corners ANY off game and is caught doing so will be scratched if at a hunt declared a “MAJOR EVENT” by UHA.
  2. Any dog being handled at the same tree three (3) times. The second time a dog is handled on the same tree it was previously handled on it will receive 125 minus. 3rd time it will be scratched.
  3. Females smelling strong enough to attract dogs, or a dog that is riding other dogs. The majority must agree unless a non-hunting judge is supplied for cast. 
  4. Once a timeout has been called, the cast must unanimously agree upon a location to meet in 1 hour. Any handler and dog failing to be back at the agreed upon location within 1 hour of the timeout being called, will be scratched.
  5. For running livestock. 
  6. For hunting over the advertised hunt time. 
  7. Any dog failing to make an attempt to hunt within any 10 consecutive hunting minutes. If time is applied on a dog for not hunting, the dog must stay gone for 5 minutes to break the 10 minutes.
  8. Handler related scratching offenses:
    Putting a muzzle on a dog during hunting time. 
  9. For use of any device used to control dogs during the cast. 
  10. If a handler hollers at or physically abuses the dog. 
  11. If the handler fails to declare their dog treed that is obviously treeing for a period of three (3) minutes, that the judge will announce and apply a stationary. Dogs must be declared treed while three is running but not after the three has expired. Judge must verify the dog is at a tree before it can be scratched. A dog cannot be scratched if found in a place of danger and is barking for help.
  12. For climbing or cutting trees or disturbing a place of refuge. Shaking limbs, vines, or knocking on a tree is NOT considered disturbing a place of refuge. 
  13. For intentionally killing coon or other game. 
  14. If caught searching a tree before the start of shining time. 
  15. For failing to stay with the cast unless when allowed to leave. (b) Leaving Cast When hunting judges are used, each handler is required to remain with the cast for the entire cast duration. A handler may not leave the cast for any reason except to go to his dog on a separate tree after the tree is closed and cast acknowledges.  
  16. For encouraging, discouraging or physically abusing a dog. Praising a handled dog is not considered encouraging.  
  17. For use of scoring aids other than light or mechanical squallers. Laser pointer light is permitted as is a thermal. However, coon must be visibly seen by majority or non-hunting judge to be scored plus. 
  18. If any handler displays unsportsmanlike conduct towards any individual on club grounds or during the hunt. Any threats must be reported to a UHA OFFICIAL, those found guilty of threatening any member, club member, or spectator at a UHA Event will be banned from UHA for life.
  19. Stationary Rule – Any dog continually barking in the same place for a period of five (5) minutes will be scratched, unless called treed. This rule is to apply to a dog obviously barking treed. If a dog should pause for more than one (1) minute or leave the area break the five (5). Handler(s) must be advised any time the stationary rule is being applied on his/her dog and that it will be scratched unless declared treed. If it returns, a new stationary rule will be started. If the five (5) minute rule is being applied to a dog and another dog is called treed in the same place, the five (5) minute rules will be broken. No stationary is to be applied on a dog when another dog is declared treed. Anytime the stationary rule has been running for two (4) minutes or more and dog(s) stops barking, the one (1) minute rule should be applied. Should the five (5) minute rule expire before one (1) minute expires and dog resumes barking, the handler(s) should be permitted to make a tree call provided the call is made within the next three barks the dog makes.
  20. Fighting/Aggression – Any dog snarling, growling, or coming off a tree toward another dog will be scratched. A dog with its hair turned up, growling, and fussing will be scratched. Equal consideration should be given regarding scratching a dog showing aggression while hunting, as well as, a dog who is treed. A dog may be scratched when observed in an altercation with another dog. When the aggressor(s) is known, scratch the aggressor(s), when unknown, scratch all dogs involved. No dog should be scratched for fighting while under the control of his/her handler (on leash, in a truck, etc.) or because of another dog previously scratched or withdrawn but not handled. (a) Judge may put any dog(s) under warning that he/she suspects is causing trouble without scratching the dog(s). Judges are not required to see dog(s) showing aggression in order to place that dog(s) under a warning. In any subsequent altercation where the aggressor dog is not known, but an altercation is observed, the dog(s) under warning shall be scratched with the other dog(s) involved being permitted to remain in the cast under warning. (b) No  will be allowed to withdraw his/her dog to avoid being “scratched for fighting”. 
  21. Undeserved Points – Any handler making a deliberate attempt to gain undeserved points or avoid deserved minus points or deserved scratch, will be scratched. This also includes making a deliberate attempt to assign another handler undeserved minus points or an undeserved scratch.

SECTION VI – TIMEOUTS, PANELS, AND OTHER.

PART A – TIME OUTS 

  1. Judge or majority of cast if hunting judge is used, may call time for any reason listed below:
  2. In case of accident or sickness. 
  3. When dogs are getting on or very near a highway, trail onto property where permission has not been granted, or trail into a place where there is danger to dogs or handlers. Cast must abide by guides concerns.
  4. When dog(s) are trailing out of hearing in multiple directions, and all and/or any dog can not be judge. The majority must agree unless a non-hunting judge is supplied for cast. 
  5. After scoring dog(s) on tree and all remaining dogs are either on leash or declared treed, and cast decides to move to new location after all trees are scored, time out may be called walking to remaining trees with scored dogs on leash. Hunt time shall be back in during the shining time of each tree. If a dog leaves a tree, time shall be called back in and dogs on leash recast.  
  6. If dogs get with another group of dogs that are trailing, treed, or aggressive. 
  7. If dogs are struck and time out is called, dogs declared struck will receive minus strike points. The only exception is when the life of a dog or human life is in danger. Call must be agreed upon by majority of cast or non hunting judge.
  8. Vehicles – At no time will a cast be permitted to use any type of vehicle to travel to dogs during hunting time or to score pending trees after hunting time. 
  9. PART B – Tracking Systems/Training Collars
  1. Tracking Systems/Training Collars — Tracking Receiver/Transmitter (handhelds) paired with collars that are NOT capable of producing ANY type of tone, vibration or electronic stimulation may be powered on and used at any time. Audio alerts on tracking receivers (handhelds) must be muted. No device that can produce any type of tone, vibration, or electronic stimulation may be attached to a dog at any time. Handlers must allow the Judge to check their tracking system for any electronic stimulation, vibration, or tone capability at any time they ask. Checking may include powering on a handler’s equipment and inspecting it for verification. Anyone found to have modified tracking or training equipment to disguise electronic tone or stimulation capability will be scratched and if found guilty by a disciplinary panel, will receive disciplinary actions. This rule is to be strictly enforced. Any time a handler is scratched for tracking/training equipment infractions; misconduct charges MUST be filed and submitted to UHA .Tracking System Use during the cast is intended for the personal use of the handler and the safety of the handler’s dog only. No information obtained from tracking devices will be permitted for use in scoring situations in the woods or at panel question hearings. Dog(s) must be heard before handler(s) can make a call and all time-out rules and requirements still apply.
  2. Dummy Collars — Dogs may not wear a Dummy Collar or an inactive Training Collar during hunting time at UHA Event.
  3. Training Scents — No dog(s) or handler(s) shall be permitted to use or wear training, breaking or any other scent to encourage or discourage their dog or other cast members dogs at UHA events. This is to include the use of scented breaking collars and/or other natural scents that may be used to distract other dogs and interfere with their ability to compete. Any violation of this rule will cause the dog to be scratched and could result in disciplinary action being taken against all members involved in such violation. 

PART C – Panel / Questions

  1. Any Handler has the right to question the scoring of any dog in the cast. Questions must be placed on the scorecard at the time the dog is scored or should have been scored. Questions must be submitted to the Judge and remaining cast members to be resolved by a majority vote. If any cast member is dissatisfied with the majority decision, that decision may be brought to a Panel to be heard after the cast is finished by placing a deposit of $20 with the Judge at the time of the question. No deposit is required when cast has voted but does not have a majority, such as a 2-2 vote. Hunt Director will assemble a panel of three (3) qualified people to hear the question. Panel members should be current members in good standing with the UHA; however the best qualified personnel available who have no interest in the outcome of the cast may be used even if they are not UHA members. The Handler with the question should quote the rule violation to the Question Panel whenever possible. The Question Panel Chairman should show the rule used to reach their decision to the cast members. The $20 dollar question deposit will not be refunded later in the cast if the Handler changes his mind. However, the Handler may choose to drop the question and forfeit the deposit at the end of the cast if it is agreeable with all cast members. Handler may put an IOU on the scorecard (in notes section), which must be paid before the question is heard. If the Panel finds in favor of the questioning Handler, the deposit will be returned and the scorecard changed to reflect the change. If the Panel finds against the question, the deposit will be forfeited to the Sponsoring Club. Panel decision is final, unless appealed by the complainant. 
  2. If a cast winner and their dog have returned to the club and the scorecard has been presented to the Hunt Director before deadline, they remain eligible for the final cast even if in a question panel process when deadline expires. 

PART D – Panel Conduct  

  1. All cast members and panel members are required to conduct themselves professionally during panel hearings. The panel members will call upon each cast member to speak, one at a time. While one cast member speaks, all other cast members are to remain respectful and quiet. Raised voices, vulgar, threatening, intimidating or insulting language will not be tolerated. Violators should be warned once, but if they continue, should be immediately excused from the panel hearing, possibly scratched from the cast and misconduct charges filed by the members, if panel feels it to be necessary.  
  2. Questioning the scoring of a tree you must put up $100 to the club to send 3 panel members out to go review the tree if judgement call is not overturned $50 goes to the club and $50 goes to UHA. If overturned, the handler with the question will get their $100 back. 
  3. If you disagree with the panel you can put up $100 and appeal the panel’s call and call a representative to have them review the call. The UHA rep reserves the right to get input and assemble their own panel if applicable. if the call is not overturned $50 goes to the club $50 goes to UHA. If overturned, the handler with the question will get their $100 back and the $20 they lost at panel.

PART E – MULTIMEDIA/ PHOTOS / VIDEOS / LIVE STREAMS / INTERVIEWS

  1. UHA reserves the right to have media at any UHA event this may include, but it is not limited to TV Networks, News Outlets, News reporters, podcasters, influencers, TV Shows, social media networks. Pictures and videography of any or all cast will be mandatory at all UHA events. If the handler defers the option to be pictured or videoed, they then can WD or take automatic 4th place. Any UHA member that enters a UHA sanctioned event also agrees to the release and publication of ANY interviews, picture, or videos at UHA discretion.  
  2. POSTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA SITES
    1. Any member choosing to post any negative or derogatory information/comments regarding UHA, UHA Owners, or any other UHA member, or non-hunting guide or judge in a UHA licensed event on any social media ourtle will be suspended immediately and will be reviewed by a disciplinary committee, appointed by UHA, for any other possible penalties.
  3. PHOTO, AUDIO, AND VIDEO RELEASE AGREEMENT
    1. Each member, through application of the United Houndsmen Association, agrees to permit the used of photos, audio, and/or video recording at any UHA Licensed Event that he/she may be apart of. These will be used by UHA for promotional and/or recognition purposes without any type of compensation for the use of any said photos, audio, or videos. Member further agrees to hold UHA harmless in the event of any error with use of said photos, audio, or videos.
  4. PHOTO REQUIREMENT
    1. In all open events with (4) entries or less, a picture of the cast members with their dogs shall be required. Pictures should be submitted with the hunt report or to a UHA executive. The photo should be submitted with the hunt report, emailed to UHA, or texted to a UHA executive.
  5. COMMON SENSE RULE: There will not be a specific rule to cover ever possible situation. These rules are written and intended to identify and reward the dog that hunts, trikes, trails, and trees a live raccoon and stays until the handler arrives. At times it will necessary to uses COMMON SENSE rather than literal interpretation of these rules towards this end. It is within the scope of these rules for UHA Officials, the judges, panel and/or appeal panel to use their judgment and discretion on situations not specifically covered by these rules. 

SECTION VII – 2026 HUNT FORMATS, PROGRAMS, AND RACE FORMAT.

UHA Youth Program 

  • To compete in the UHA Youth Program, the youth must be a paid-up youth member, and in good standings, of the United Houndsmen Association. 
  • Host club must provide a guide and a non-hunting judge for every youth cast. It is encouraged and allowed for youth to carry the card and record scores, but only under the supervision of the non-hunting judge, and for learning purposes.
  • The UHA Youth Program consists of two divisions, Junior and Senior. The Junior division is for youth ages 4 years to 11 years old. The Senior division is for youth age 12 to 18 years old. If 18 years old, MUST still be in high school. Once a youth has graduated high school and is 18 they will no longer be eligible to compete in the youth program. Please keep this in mind when competing and obtaining a Youth Membership. Youth must compete in the age group in which their age is as of March 2nd in the year they are competing. In the instance that the Jr entries are full, a Jr can move up into the Sr Division. Any wins made by a youth handler at any Open or Youth Open Event will count towards any Youth Race Standings and any National Open Standings.
  • If there are not enough entered in one age division to have a cast, both age groups can be drawn together.
  • In the Sr division, no adult help is allowed whatsoever. Judges are encouraged to help with rule questions anytime asked by a competing youth handler. 
  • Youth are allowed to compete in any open events and major events, if there is enough for a youth cast within the event and does not mess up the cast drawout, it is mandatory to have a youth cast, even if the event is going to only have (1) 3 dog cast, and 3 yout enter, the 3 youth will get the 3 dog.
  • Clubs are required to have a UHA Youth cast at any event where there are enough youth desiring to participate, and can do so.   
  • There must be at least 3 dogs to hold an open or youth open cast at any UHA licensed event. In the event there is a 2 dog casts because of # of dogs entered, there must be a non-hunting judge OR an additional voting member that both hunters agree upon.
  • At all UHA hunts where there is a Youth cast, photos of the entire cast (handlers/dogs) must be emailed to jonjohnson@uhahunts.com within 7 days. These photos will be posted on the UHA website and/or the UHA Facebook page. 

YOUTH RULES

  • At youth hunts ONLY, Eight (8) minutes of hunting time may be used to shine trees.
  • Individuals holding the first tree shall be granted first two (2) minutes to shine alone if they want, when asked by the judge. Judge should ask at every tree.

JUNIOR DIVISION AGES (4 YEARS OLD – 11 YEARS OLD)

  • THESE RULES APPLY FOR ALL JUNIOR HANDLERS PARTICIPATING IN ANY UHA YOUTH HUNT, ANY UHA OPEN EVENT HUNT, ANY MAJOR HUNT EVENT, AND ANY UHA LICENSED EVENT!!!

JR RULE #1: STRIKE & TREE LEARNING RULE: 

NO DOG BEING HANDLED BY A JUNIOR YOUTH HANDLER IS TO BE PENALIZED OR RECEIVE MINUS POINTS FOR STRIKING OR TREEING THEIR DOG AT THE WRONG TIME. Cast and judge must take the opportunity as a learning experience to teach the young handler why you must listen and only call your own dog at the right time. Failure to do so once they are 14 years or older will result in penalties and minus points, which could ultimately cost them a cast win in the future. But NO handler of the age 13 years or younger will be penalized or misused for calling the wrong dog or their dog struck or treed at the wrong time, when it is not striking or treeing.

YOUTH JR RULE #2: ASSISTANCE RULE: 

In the Jr division, each entrant must have an adult with them that is responsible for that youth. That adult may help the youth with when to call his/her dog, but the youth must verbally make the call for position before it will be accepted. Parents are only permitted to assist their child with physically handling and assisting with when to call their dog. Any unsolicited advice, encouragement, disencouragement, or questions are not to be spoken by parents or the adult assisting the handler. It is the youth handlers job, and more importantly the adults, to learn/teach them the rules outside of the competition. Assistance is to only be in the form of physically handling or communicating with the youth handler they are with when the correct time to strike and tree their dog is. If any adult is caught providing any assistance or influence outside of these parameters, they could be suspended by UHA, and the dog may be scratched from the cast by the panel if caught guilty. Any instances must be questioned, heard by a panel, and then the panel will submit the case for review by UHA Executives.

2026 NATIONAL RACE 

  • This race will BEGIN ON MARCH 2, 2026 and END ON FEBRUARY 28, 2027. 
  • The 2025 UHA Competition Season National Race will be based on dog earnings from cast win awards at UHA Open Events & Youth Open Events.

2026 NATIONAL FINALS HUNT 

  • The TOP 32 of the 2025 National Race will be qualify for the 2026 National Finals Hunt, once the 2026 competition season is complete and figured. Top 32 will compete for the National Escrow Fund from the open events held for the 2025 Competition Season, hunt money, as well as other awards/prizes.
  • In the event any dog is tied in earnings at the end of the year, dog will co hold places. Meaning more than 32 could qualify. Throughout the year however, if dogs hold same amount of earning, it will be listed on the National Race in alphabetical order of breed being first, owners last name being 2nd, and dogs name being 3rd.
  • The hunt will be held in the area/location where most of the dogs in the Top 32 are from, in premium hunting. Clubs within that are be allowed to bid if interested, if they wish. Bidding opens January 1, 2027 & closes January 31st, 2027. Only bids from club that host UHA Open Hunts in 2026 will be considered.  The club that proposes the overall most prestigious experience for our Top 32 will be awarded the hunt, not necessarily the highest bid. We want to roll the red carpet out for out Top 32, so we will be looking to partner with a club eager to assist with that goal!
  • National Finals will have 2 Nights of Qualifying in 2026. Night #1 Pre-Entry Fee will be $150 (Walk-Up $200). Night #2 Pre Entry Fee will be $200 (Walk-Up $250).
  • UHA will open Pre-Entry’s to the Top 16 on February 15th, 2027. #17-32 can Pre-Enter beginning February 28th, 2027. Pre-Entry Deadline Ends March 5, 2027. Any dog or handler who chooses to or can not attend, will forfeit his/her spot. UHA will contact dogs in order of final standings to fill the Top 32.
  • Fallout Exception! – “Make the 48!” If any dog becomes deceased, in season, injured, can’t attend, or chooses not to come will result in the next dog in line getting the opportunity. With the cut off being 48. Any dog placing #49 or greater in the 2026 UHA National Race will not get ANY opportunity to compete in the National Finals Hunt.
  • PLEASE READ – FALLOUT EXCEPTION CONTINUED… If a dog doesn’t compete or show up. The next dog in line get the spot. This goes for pre-entry or walk-ups… MEANING… say night #1 dog #32 competes and does not advance on and then choose to NOT compete night #2 the next dog in line would be eligible to walk-up, again only to spot #48. MEANING… you could be eligible for the National Finals in 2026 up until the last second IF you place #33 – #48 !!!! 
  • The # 1 dog in the National Open Race will be declared the 2025 UHA NATIONAL RACE LEADER, and does not have to compete in the Top 32 qualifying nights, They will advance directly to Night #3 and will draw out at random with the winners from Night #1 & Night #2. 
  •  The Number 1 dog of each Breed Race will be declared their BREED RACE LEADER. FROM ACTIVE BREED RACES ONLY! (SEE BELOW) Each Breed Race Leader does not have to compete in the Top 32 qualifying nights, They will advance directly to Night #3 and will draw out at random with the winners from Night #1 & Night #2. 

2026 BREED RACES

  • These races will BEGIN ON MARCH 1, 2026 and END ON FEBRUARY 28, 2027. 
  • UHA recognizes the following as breeds: Black & Tans, Blueticks, Crossbreed, English, Plott Hound, Redbone, Treeing Curs, Treeing Walker
  • For the 2026 UHA Competition Season there will be the following Breed Races: Black & Tan Breed, Bluetick Breed, English Breed, Redbone Breed, Treeing Walker Breed, and the TRI-Breed. TRI-Breed Race will consist of the Crossbreed, Plott Hound, and Treeing Curs.
  • HOW TO HAVE A ACTIVE BREED RACE: Each breed race must have a total of 6 dogs with open event earnings won, to be an active Breed Race, and to send the Number 1 dog to Night #3 of the National Finals Hunt. Any breed who has less than 6 dogs with earnings won, will not be considered an active breed race, and will not send a dog to Night #3 of the National Finals Hunt.
  • We will analyze the number of each breed in the TRI-Breed race, at the end of the competition season, and discuss if we need to separate any breed as their own race in 2027. We want everyone to have the opportunity to have an active Breed Race and every Breed Race to send their Number 1 dog to the National Finals. That is why in 2025 we will have the TRI-Breed Race.
  • Each Breed is allowed to have a Breed Championship Hunt, in order to do so a club my host and organize a breed championship hunt, by providing a $250 added purse for the hunt, hunt will be a $100 Event Entry Fee. *80% Hunt Awards, 15% Host Club, 5% UHA.  Only dogs of the same breed, can compete for each respective Breed Championship. UHA will coordinate with the club on total prize package.

2026 YOUTH HANDLER OF THE YEAR RACE / YOUTH NATIONAL FINALS

  • THIS race will BEGIN ON MARCH 1, 2026 and END ON FEBRUARY 28, 2027.
  • The 2027 Youth Open Race will be split for the Junior Division and Senior Division.
  • Earnings won at ANY UHA Youth Open or Open Hunt.
  • The Top 9 of each division will meet at the end of the year to have a hunt off to declare an overall Junior Top Handler of the Year and Senior Top Handler of the Year.
  • The Top 9 from each division will be determined, based on the Youth Handlers with the most open event earnings won for the year at UHA open and youth open events.
  • Once the race is completed and finalized, UHA will contact and confirm the Top 9 for each division. UHA will attempt to fill the Top 9, in the event any of them cannot make it upon confirming. To do so, however, UHA will only utilize the Top 18. Beyond that, anyone unable to confirm will go in as a “NO SHOW SPOT”.
  • The Top 3 dogs out of each Top 9 leaders (Junior & Seniors) are to be split and hunted in separate casts at the youth handler hunt off.
  • The handlers that win the Youth Handler Hunt Race Hunt Off will be declared the 2025 Junior Youth Top Handler of the Year and 2025 Senior Youth Top Handler of the Year. 
  • Final 3 of each division must hunt it off to determine a TOP HANDLER OF THE YEAR. Each Top Handler of the Year, both Junior and Senior, will earn a spot in the YOUTH NATIONAL FINALS.
