  •  UHA Official Hunt Rules
  •  Effective January 1, 2024 – Any changes made will be posted on www.uhahunts.com
  •  All rules, policies, and interpretations are subject to the final decision by UHA in its sole judgment and discretion.
  • 30 Second Rule. Each time dog(s) is turned loose, the handler has a 30 second grace period in which their dog does not have to be called. After the 30 second period, the dog must be called struck on or before the third bark.
  • The judge will acknowledge each handler’s calls by repeating the dog’s name and number of points awarded for every strike and tree call made.
  • When dog(s) are turned loose, the cast should walk slowly in the direction the guide recommends.
  • All cast members must walk at a pace that all handlers can maintain.
  • After the dog(s) are struck in, the cast will attempt to always remain as close to the dog(s) as possible, within reason.
  • If cast is unable to keep all dog(s) within hearing range, the majority may agree to call time out only after the 6-minute rule has been applied.
  • The cast must stay together, and all cast members will go to all trees unless dogs treed are split.  A handler may leave the cast to go to a split tree when time is up or when all dogs have been declared treed. A minimum of three cast members must be present to score each tree. A handler going to a split tree must leash his/her dog and wait for at least two (2) more members of the cast to come and score the tree.
  • Handlers must allow judge to reach tree first. Dog(s) declared treed must show tree.

Strike Points

  •  Only one set of strike points. 100 points for the dog struck first, 75 second, 50 points third and 25 points fourth. All dogs must be loose and competing for strike for 100 strike points to be available. When dog(s) are re-struck after being scored plus, minus, circle or deleted they may only be re-struck for 25 points, unless all dogs are competing for 100 strike points, or the minus was for a miscall.
  • NOTE: New rule change as of 01/05/24 @11am central 30 second rule. Each time dog(s) cut there is a 30 second grace period in which the handler does not have to strike dog. After 30 seconds, the handler must strike on or before the third bark.
  • Dog(s) cannot receive scoreable strike points if not struck before the first dog is declared treed unless split. However, the dog(s) may receive tree points if it trees on that tree within the three (3) minutes.
  • A handler calling the wrong dog (strike or tree) the first offense results in a warning issued and no points assigned. On second offense, the available position is minus. On the third offense, dog is scratched.
  • Babbling: Dog(s) declared struck and determined to be babbling shall be minused on strike. If there is any question when a hunting judge is used, the cast must vote immediately. It takes a majority of cast vote to minus. A tied vote results in deleted strike points..
  • Points may be split for position when called positions cannot be determined
  • Strike will be minus, If none of the declared struck dogs open within six (6) minutes.
  •  Tree Points
  • 125 points for the dog treed first, 75 points second, 50 points third and 25 points fourth.
  • NOTE: 30 seconds after the first dog being declared treed, the only tree position available is 25.
  • Tree is dead after three minutes.
  • Dogs not opening on track must be declared struck before a tree call will be accepted.
  • Dog must open and be heard opening when declared struck or treed. Otherwise, the call may not be accepted.
  • Points may be split for position when called positions cannot be determined.

Points will be plus when dogs strike and tree and coon is seen during shining time, by a non-hunting Judge   or by a majority of the cast when hunting Judge is used.

  • When dog is declared struck and treed and coon is seen other than in tree, dog declared treed to receive strike and tree points. Dogs not called treed shall receive plus strike points only.
  •  If dog(s) catches coon, strike points only. Coon must be seen.
  • One set of strike points in case of split tree, and each will be counted as separate trees for tree points. Dog(s) that are shut out must still be declared struck. They are eligible for tree points if they are declared treed within the three minutes. If they are at tree shut out on when judge arrives, strike points will be minus. No dog will receive minus points for coming into tree after Judge arrives unless a coon is seen and the dogs treeing are awarded plus points. In this case their strike will be minus. No circle or plus points are available to any dog coming into a closed tree whether they come in before or after the judge arrives.
  • 02/14/24 update: Until further notice if a dog comes into a tree being scored or is treed and not declared treed at tree to be/being scored (after judge arrives) strike points will be minus if coon is seen. Strike points will be deleted in all other scenarios.
  • If dog called treed, after three minutes has expired, no additional dog can be declared treed at that tree.
  •  Tree will be minus when dog(s) tree and a non-hunting Judge or a majority of the cast when hunting Judge is used can plainly see no coon to be there. In this case, both strike and tree points will be minus.
  • After a dog is declared treed, at least one of the dogs declared treed must bark at least once every two minutes until cast arrives at the tree, or dogs declared treed at that tree will be minus and the tree will be open.
  • When a dog that is declared treed leaves that tree the dog’s tree points are minus.
  • If dog returns to tree within the three minutes, he will receive the next available position on tree. 30 seconds after the first dog being declared treed, the only tree position available is 25.
  • Dogs shut out on tree cannot receive strike points unless split. The dog (s) must still be declared struck and can receive tree points if called treed before the tree is dead. In this case, strike points will be deleted.
  • All dogs called treed during allowed hunting time must be scored.
  • Dog should not be minused tree points if he comes back a short distance to meet handler if dog goes back in to tree.

Points will be circle if half the cast votes to plus and half the cast votes to circle a tree.

  • Points will be circle if tree has a hole large enough for a coon to enter into or tree has a nest, or a place of refuge where a coon could be hidden.
  • Points will be deleted if half the cast votes circle and half the cast votes to minus a tree.
  • Also delete if dogs are trailing when hunt time is over.
  • When dog trees on a tree or coon previously scored, points will be deleted. If dog returns a third time, dog will be scratched.
  •
    Scratching offenses
  • For being handled at the same tree three times. First time returning to a previously scored tree a warning is given. Next time it is scratched.
  • For fighting or attempting to fight during the hunt only when off leash. When the aggressive dog is clearly known, scratch the aggressive dog only. If not known, scratch all dogs involved.
  • Females smelling strong enough to attract dogs, or a dog that is riding other dogs. The majority must agree unless a non-hunting judge is supplied for cast.
  • For delaying completion of cast for one hour after time out is called during the hunt.
  • For running livestock.
  • For hunting over or under the advertised hunt time.
  • Any dog failing to make an attempt to hunt within any 10 consecutive scorecard minutes.
  • Handler related scratching offenses:
Putting a muzzle on dog during hunting time.
  • For use of any device used to control dog prior to cast completion.
  • If handler hollers at or physically abuses the dog.
  • If the handler fails to declare treed a dog obviously treeing (Judge’s decision) for a period of three (3) minutes. Dog may be declared treed while three is running but not after the three has expired. Judge must verify dog to be at a tree before it can be scratched.
  • If handler fails to return to Event Leader after cast becomes separated. Time period allotted shall be determined by Event Leader.
  • For climbing or cutting trees or disturbing a place of refuge. Shaking limbs, vines, or knocking on tree is NOT considered disturbing a place of refuge.
  • For intentionally killing coon or other game.
  • For searching tree before the start of shining time.
  • For failing to stay with cast unless given permission to leave.
  • For encouraging, discouraging or physically abusing a dog. Praising a handled dog is not considered encouraging.
  • For use of scoring aids other than light or mechanical squallers. Laser pointer light is permitted as is a thermal. However, coon must be visibly seen by majority or non-hunting judge to be scored plus.
  • The handler’s dog will be scratched for any rule violations by their spectators.
  • If any handler displays unsportsmanlike conduct towards any individual on club grounds or during the hunt.
  • If scorecard lacks handler’s signature or if Event Leader cannot determine an accurate score, dog(s) affected will be scratched.
  • Time outs
  • Judge or majority of cast if hunting judge is used, may call time for reason listed below.
  • In case of accident or sickness.
  • When dogs are getting on or very near a highway, trail onto property where permission has not been granted, or trail into a place where there is danger to dogs or handlers.
  • When dog(s) are trailing out of hearing in different directions.
  • After scoring dog(s) on tree and all remaining dogs are either on leash or declared treed, and cast decides to move to new location after all trees are scored, time out may be called walking to remaining trees with scored dogs on leash. Hunt time shall be back in during shining time of each tree. If dog leaves tree, time shall be called back in and dogs on leash recast.
  • If dogs get with another group of dogs that are trailing, treed, or aggressive.
  • If dogs are struck and time out is called, dogs declared struck will receive minus strike points. The only exception is when the life of a dog or human life is in danger. Call must be agreed upon by majority of cast or non hunting judge.
  • Scoring
  •  Scorecards to be carried by Judge and must be scored in plain view of all cast members.
  • Dog must hold the tree for three (3) minutes unless all dogs in cast are declared treed, on leash, or hunting time has expired. If one dog in cast, dog must hold tree or three (3) minutes. If possible be close to the tree within three (3) minutes. If handlers are so far from tree that it will take more than three (3) minutes to get to tree, they are to start walking toward tree, but stopping periodically to let other handlers see if their dog is treeing. Judge is not to allow any handler to intentionally keep holding him away from tree.
  • Six (6) minutes of hunting time may be used to shine trees. Individual holding first tree shall be granted first two minutes to shine alone only if requested.
  • Where dogs are split, judge will go with handler to the dog that trees first. If a split tree is obvious (Judge’s decision), split tree will be noted. Separate time must be kept on each tree unless all dogs are called treed. Judge shall give handler permission to handle dog on split tree unless cast is in process of shining a tree. After the split dog has been handled, handler shall return to cast. If all dogs are called treed and handled and cast plans to move to new location after scoring all trees, trees may be scored in most convenient order. In all other cases, trees must be scored in the order dogs were called treed.
  • After tree scored, cast must walk 30 seconds or to the last place dog dog(s) were heard. At this point dogs are to be cast. No leash lock except in the case above where dogs are scored out of order. In all other cases, dog(s) must be recast.
  • A dog declared struck after the recast, receives the next available strike position. The strike position previously held by dog(s) on leash is not available until dog(s) are recast. Note: It is possible that multiple dogs may occupy fourth strike position.
  • Dogs at tree must be leashed.
  •
    Questions
  • Questions in the field must be made immediately and a question mark placed by the score. When a non-hunting judge is carrying the card and a call is questioned, the Event Leader and/or panel will make a decision on the question after scorecard is received and parties discuss the question.
  • If a question is made under a hunting judge, all cast members must vote on the call. If a handler refuses to vote, their dog will be scratched. It takes a majority vote to overturn the hunting judge decision. Only calls/non calls can be questioned that were questioned at the time of the call.
  • Panel and appeal instructions.
  • Must question judgement call at the time the call was made.
  • Questioning the scoring of a tree you must put up $100 to club to send 3 panel members out to go review the tree if judgement call is not overturned $50 goes to the club and $50 goes to UHA.

  • Put up $20 to pay club to put three panel members together if ruling is overturned you receive the $20 back if not the club keeps the $20.

Ties

  • Updated 04/14/24 for clarification.
  • Determining WInners
  • A. Final score — Dog’s final score is determined by subtracting all minus points from all plus points. All circle points count as zero as a final score. The following formula applies to selecting a cast winner, determining final cast eligibility and plac￾ing dogs in a final cast. After determining the final score, the order of placement is as follows:
  • (1) Most Plus Points — If more than one (1) dog has the same amount of plus points as a final score, see tie breaking rules.
  • (2) Total score of zero — All circle points count as zero for a final score. If more than one (1) dog has a final score of zero (no plus and no minus), see tie breaking rules. (3) least Minus Points with Plus or Circle Points — The dog with the least minus points that has scored plus or circle points. (4) least Minus Points without Plus or Circle Points — The dog with the least minus points without scoring plus or circle points. (5) Dog with no Plus or Circle Points — A dog without plus or circle points can￾not place over a dog who has scored plus points or circle points.
  • Breaking Ties — All ties must be broken to determine a cast winner or placement. Ties will be broken as follows:
  • (1) The dog with the most plus tree points.
  • (2) The dog with the most plus strike points.

  • (4) The dog with the most circle tree points.
  • (5) The dog with the least minus points.
  • (6) If still a tie, split and share winnings and points, flip a coin, or hunt 1 hour – whichever is agreed upon by the majority of the cast that is tied. If an agreement cannot be reached, winnings and points must be split. If the hunt has added money, prizes, or is to determine placement for a final four or advancement of that particular hunt, a cast winner must be determined by either hunting it off or flipping a coin. If those tied cannot agree, winner will be determined by the flip of a coin.

Payouts for Open Hunts

State Championships & The UHA National Finals

Our National Finals Hunt will be based on the majority location of the top 16 in the UHA Open National Standings as of August 1, 2024.

For example, if 4 people are from Tx in the top 16, 4 from Ok, 3 from Ohio, and 5 from TN, the National Finals will be held in Tennessee.

The top 16 in the standings as of December 31, 2024 will qualify for the National Finals.

Top 16 determined by points earned which positions them in order of standings. The way points are earned is explained elsewhere in the rules. If there is a tie for position after total # of points earned, tiebreaker will be by # of cast wins with plus points. (Added July 1 2024 at 4:48pm by JP) If still a tie then decided by total money won. If still tied those tied will be put on a wheel and wheel spun to determine position. This is the way any end of year tiebreakers will be broken for both handler and dog standings.

Those dogs that win their State Championship hunt in states that have one will also qualify for the National Finals. In order to have a State Championship in your state, the hunt must be a $100 open hunt with a minimum of SIXTEEN (16) entries. It also must have a minimum of $250 added money. If given 6 weeks’ notice, the UHA will furnish trophies to the King and Queen of Hunt at any State Championship.

To clarify, any State Championship Hunt must have a minimum of 16 entries in order for the winner to receive an auto invitation to compete along with the top 16 at the National Finals. You can schedule a $100 open hunt – State Championship with $250 added, and we will recognize the winner as the State Champion. However: the winner will only receive a National Finals automatic qualification if there are at least 16 entries.

As of 12/31/2024 the dog that is #1 in the National Standings (open) will automatically advance to the final cast at the National Finals. All other dogs that qualify will compete until there is a winner. At that time, the winner of the top 4 cast will face the #1 dog in the standings as of 12/32/24 in a 2-dog cast. The winner of that cast will be the UHA National Champion. The loser of that cast will be the UHA Reserve National Champion.

30% of the National Escrow money will be given to the UHA National Champion. 20% will be given to the UHA Reserve National Champion. Other escrow monies paid will be given to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place dogs based on placement of their finish at the National Finals Hunt, not the year end standings. They will be awarded 10% for 3rd, 6% for 4th, and 4% for 5th. The final 30% of the escrow money from the 2024 season will be divided up and paid to cast winners at the National Finals. Each cast win receives and equal part of this 30%. For example, if you win 3 cast, you will receive 3 shares of whatever the amount is. If you win only 1 cast, you will only receive 1 share of the amount.

Awards to be given at the National Finals at the minimum are –

100% escrow payout in the open as outlined above.

All escrow from the Youth Hunts will be used to buy awards for the Youth.

Year End awards will include buckles for both the Youth (Jr and Sr) and Open handler of the year. These will be awarded to those with the most points earned over the regular season, not including the National Finals. How points are earned is found on the official UHA website under the rules tab.

The Open National Champion, Open Reserve Champion, and those that place 2nd through 10th at the Open National Finals will receive trophies.

Remember, these are the minimum awards. We have been working hard to get sponsors on board and will certainly continue trying to get sponsors for our National Finals as well.
